When is the Best Time to Change Career?
Last week we shared eight signs that it’s time for a new career. Did any of these feel familiar to you? Whether you’re bored in your current role, you feel that it no longer meets your priorities, or you’re just keen to explore a new interest, a change of career could change your life for the better.
You may know deep down that your career isn’t meeting your needs any more, but it can still be difficult to actually do something about it. There are many factors to consider in situations like these, and knowing what you want to do next is only one part of the equation. One of the biggest issues you’ll encounter is the question of timing. When is the right time for you to make the leap?
This is a big question and many of us struggle with it for a long time before we do anything about it. You might find yourself coming up with all sorts of reasons why now isn’t the right time. These reasons could be things like:
- Needing to reach an ‘expected length of service’ in your current role
- Waiting it out in case things improve on their own
- Not being able to afford training
- Getting more experience to beef up your CV
- Wanting to be closer to retirement
- Needing to build up your savings
- Worried about having to take a step back in seniority
- Wanting to wait until after maternity leave (even if you’re not planning a pregnancy for a few years)
- Waiting until after your next appraisal
- Seeing out any big projects you’re responsible for
- Not wanting to make the wrong decisions
The reality is that most of these reasons are actually just excuses. So what’s really holding you back?
One key reason is that many of us think we’ll be judged for wanting to change career, either by potential employers or our friends/family. In reality, this is rarely the case. It’s far more likely that the people around you will view your career change as brave or inspiring: many of them will have dreamed about doing exactly the same thing at some point in their lives!
The thing to remember here is that changing career is no longer just acceptable; for most of us it’s actually expected. After all, the idea of a ‘job for life’ is now long gone. Instead, over a fifty year career we can now expect to have an average of nine jobs. So if you’re unhappy in your current role, why wait?
The only answer to when the best time is to change career is: now! The longer you spend thinking about it without taking action, the more time you’ll be stuck in your current job. This could mean that you’re wasting time in an unfulfilling role when you could be doing something that would be a much better fit.
Start taking steps towards a new career today and you could be looking at a much happier future. Need more motivation? Take a look at our case studies for some fantastic career change stories!
