What’s Stopping You From Starting Your Own Business?
Have you ever thought about starting your own business? If you have, you wouldn’t be alone. 1.8 million Brits have said they want to start their own business before 2018.
There are many, many benefits to being your own boss. One of the biggest ones is flexibility. If you work for yourself you’ll gain the flexibility to work from where you choose, work hours that suit your lifestyle, build a career that works for your family and maybe even be able to retire earlier! There’ll also be no one but you to put a cap on how much you can earn. How successful you are will be entirely down to you!
We all have ambitions for our working life. Most of us want to earn enough money to comfortably support our family. Many of us want to be able to achieve a healthy work/life balance. Some of us want to gain success and recognition for what we do.
Whatever your target is, it can be difficult to do it the way you want when you’re not in full control of your professional life. If you were to take charge of your career and start your own business, you’d be in a much better position to work towards truly fulfilling your ambitions in a way that fits your lifestyle.
So… what is stopping you?
- Fear of failure?
- Not knowing where to start?
- Under-confidence in your ability?
- Worry about finances?
- Concern about leaving your current comfort zone?
- Reluctance to re-train?
- Unsure if it’s the right time?
- Lack of start up capital?
- Confusion about legal obligations?
- Not sure if your idea is good enough?
If you’ve been putting off your dream of business ownership for one of these reasons, we’ve got news for you: you don’t have to! All these reasons, and many more like them, are really just excuses.
Those of you who truly want to change the face of their professional life and set up on their own will need to decide that they want it enough to tackle these excuses and move past them. If you’re ready to take this step, congratulations.
The good news is that there is a huge amount of support out there for those that look for it. Organisations like The Prince’s Trust (if you’re under 30) and The National Enterprise Network can offer really valuable expertise.
If it’s start up capital that you feel is holding you back, it doesn’t need to. You have two options here: look into start up funding (you might even be eligible for government-backed support) or think about how you can start your business without a high initial investment. This second option is easier than you might think. In fact, we support people just like you to grow sustainable businesses without high start up costs.
Of course: you’ll need to be honest with yourself. Maybe you’re making excuses because deep down you know that self-employment isn’t the right path for you. If that’s the case, that’s okay! Establishing a successful business needs a lot of commitment and often this means putting in a lot more hours in the early days to ensure growth. You might want to do some soul searching and decide whether you’re ready not just to reap the benefits, but also to put the work in.
Is your answer yes? If you’re ready to let go of all your excuses and to start working towards making your business dreams a reality, we’d be thrilled to offer our support. Read more about what we can offer you here.
