The year on year statistics for self-employment are on the rise, and it looks like the growth in this kind of working is definitely here to stay. Between 2013 and 2014, 122,000 people in the UK become self-employed either full or part time. If you think this might be your career future, congratulations. After all, there are a lot of great things about being your own boss. But would it surprise you to know that it isn’t always easy?! Probably not!

Many different types of people succeed as small business owners, but there are certain qualities that will make success easier to come by.

So what qualities do you need to be your own boss?

Confidence

We’d argue that confidence is the number one quality you need in business. It’s vitally important for you to believe in yourself and the value of what you’re doing… otherwise why would anyone else? Whatever type of business you’re running, you’ll need to put yourself out there to advertise and promote it. You’ll need a heavy dose of confidence to make that happen!

Motivation

One of the best things about being self-employed is that you’re completely in charge of your own working day, but that can also be one of the most difficult parts to navigate. There won’t be anyone else reminding you what to work on or telling you not to waste time: it’ll all be down to you! You’ll need to be able to motivate yourself to do even the most boring tasks, otherwise your business will suffer.

Creativity

You may not be working in a creative field, but you’ll still need to do plenty of out-of-the-box thinking to get your business off the ground. This might include finding new ways to market your business, coming up with new product and service ideas and even developing a social media strategy.

Persistence

This might not be what you want to read, but for each ‘yes’ you hear in business you’ll probably have to hear two or three times as many ‘no’s. This doesn’t mean that you’re doing things wrong, it just means that you have to hunt out your ideal customers. Persistence will come in handy for this!

Organisation

Running a business can often feel like an intricate plate-spinning act. There are all sorts of things you need to keep on top of, from client work and product shipments to finances and marketing campaigns. Most business owners have to learn to be super-organised in order to keep everything running smoothly.

Bravery

Putting yourself out there as a business owner can be scary! You will need to be brave in order to walk away from a traditional job and into the world of self-employment. Many business owners take risks in order to develop and grow their business, and you may need strong nerves for that!

Do these qualities sound familiar? If you’re not sure, don’t worry. The good news is that these qualities are all things you can work on over time. Often the best way to develop them is to throw yourself in at the deep end!
