Four Questions to Ask When You’re Not Getting Promoted
Are you hoping for a promotion? Waiting for a leg-up in your career when you know you deserve it can be very frustrating.
In situations like these it’s easy to get obsessed with taking the next step. Some statistics even suggest that the average man spends 20% of their work time thinking about the next rung of the ladder. If you’ve been waiting longer than you feel is right, it may be time to ask yourself some searching questions.
Why not start with these four?
1. Could you do more?
Getting a promotion is not about simply sitting tight and waiting or your turn to come around. In order to get promoted you’ll need to be seriously pro-active. If it hasn’t happened so far, it may be that you haven’t worked hard enough. For example, you may want to consider:
- Taking on additional responsibilities
- Volunteering for new projects
- Sharing innovative ideas
- Networking with the management
- Highlighting your value and potential
- Taking advantage of learning and training opportunities
- Better advertising the hard work you’ve done
- Speaking to your line manager about your aspirations
- Deciding what you want and keeping an eye out for opportunities
- Actually applying for more senior roles when they come up
Can you say, honestly, that you’ve done your absolute best in order to get promoted? If the answer is no, it may be time to really get pro-active. If it’s yes, and you feel you’ve put in all the hard work already, it may be time to ask yourself some bigger questions.
2. Are you in the right organisation?
Sometimes a particular organisation may just not be the right fit for you. Maybe you wouldn’t be a good fit for the team in the level above, or perhaps your personal goals and aspirations don’t mesh with that of the organisation. Whatever it is, if you’re not in the right workplace you’re unlikely to advance in your career in the way that you’d like.
This doesn’t mean that a promotion is unattainable, it just means that you might need to change your employer in order to get it.
3. Are you in the right career?
Some frustrated promotion-hunters have a more fundamental issue to deal with: whether or not they’re in the right career. It may be that you’ve plateaued in your career development path because you’ve got as far as you’re going to.
Again, this isn’t to say that you’re never going to land a more senior role: you may just have to think outside of the box to do so. Could your skills, qualities and personality be more suited to a different industry? Not all career changes will require retraining or starting again from the bottom: you may find that your experience is easily transferable to another complementary industry. Be prepared to think creatively!
4. Is traditional employment right for you?
When you really take the time to think about it, you may come to the realisation that you haven’t been promoted simply because traditional 9-5 employment isn’t the right work model for you. Perhaps you’re too creative, too eccentric or simply too rebellious for your employers to see how you’d fit into a typical leadership hierarchy!
This doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, why not consider it an excellent opportunity? Traditional employment is far from the only option out there. Self-employment is becoming more and more common in the UK (in fact, it’s now at the highest level since records began!) which means there has never been more guidance available for those brave enough to take the leap.
One of the greatest benefits of self-employment is that you’ll never have to worry about waiting for a promotion. When you’re self-employed you’re totally in control of your own career and can make all the decisions yourself: including what rate of salary you feel you deserve.
